Strong El Niño still persists in the Tropical Pacific

Recent observations show that the sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) in the Equatorial Pacific are still beyond 1.50C warmer than the average indicative of a strong El Niño event. The highest running three-month SSTA was recorded in October-No vember-December 2015.

The gradual strengthening of the high pressure system over Siberia has led to the prevalence of observed northeast winds over northern Luzon. Strong to gale force northeasterly winds were also noted over the seaboard of Northern Luzon for the past several days.

Strong El Niño is now in progress in the tropical Pacific Ocean 

Most of the ENSO prediction models indicate a continuation of strong El Niño conditions during October – December season, and may last until April-May-June of 2016. This on-going El Niño event is comparable or may even surpass the sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) observed during the 1997-98 El Niño event.
