SEVERE THUNDERSTORM TRIGGERS WIDESPREAD FLOODING IN QUEZON CITY ON AUGUST 30
A severe localized thunderstorm hit northern portions of Metro Manila on August 30, 2025, between 1:00PM and 4:00PM, bringing unprecedented torrential rains, resulting in significant flooding in several areas in Quezon City.
The DOST-PAGASA Science Garden Station located in Quezon City recorded 134.2 mm of rainfall from 1:00PM to 4:00PM, which is nearly equivalent to one week’s worth of rainfall based on the monthly normal of 568.5 mm. The PAGASA National Capital Region Regional Services Division issued a thunderstorm warning at 11:57 AM on that day (TSTM Advisory #2), stating that a thunderstorm was expected to affect Metro Manila. Subsequent warnings, particularly TSTM Advisory #4 issued at 2:10 PM, indicated that intense to torrential rain showers with lightning and strong winds were already affecting portions of Metro Manila. The peak rainfall intensity reached 96.6mm within 1 hour (recorded from 2:00PM to 3:00PM), which corresponds to a return period of 10-15 years based on the rainfall-intensity-duration-frequency curves at Science Garden.
Warning posts in the Metro Manila flood monitoring stations triggered alarm and critical warning levels in Tullahan and Pasig Rivers, with water levels reaching 15.76 meters (at 4:43PM) and 13.1 (at 4:15PM) respectively. This event caused significant flooding, particularly in areas near creeks of the San Juan River system, which are already classified as highly susceptible to flood based on GeoRiskPH’s flood hazard map (see https://hazardhunter.georisk.gov.ph/map).
DOST-PAGASA continues to remind the public and local disaster risk reduction and management offices to monitor thunderstorm advisories and rainfall warnings, and take all necessary measures to protect life and property.
