PAGASA and PHIVOLCS Lead Wealth Protection Breakout Session at 8th NRDC
A key highlight of the DOST’s 8th National Research and Development Conference (NRDC) was the Wealth Protection breakout session led by PAGASA and PHIVOLCS. Held at the Centennial Hall of the Manila Hotel last July 23, 2025, the session brought together participants from government agencies, disaster risk reduction organizations, local government units, and other stakeholders.
Executive Director and Vice Chairperson Robert E.A. Borje of the Climate Change Commission and Mr. Emanuel T. Balajadia, Chief of the Organizational Planning Division of the Office of Civil Defense, served as speakers during the event. They highlighted the importance of inter-agency collaboration, climate adaptation, and the need for innovative, evidence-based solutions to strengthen disaster resilience.
Dr. Marcelino Q. Villafuerte II, PAGASA Deputy Administrator for Research and Development, led PAGASA’s presentation with CliMap v2.0, showcasing how high-resolution and accessible climate data can support climate resilience and informed decision-making. PAGASA emphasized the vital role of climate science in protecting national wealth.
Other speakers were Ms. Mabelline T. Cahulogan and Ms. Joan C. Salcedo from PHIVOLCS who presented HazardHunterPH and REDAS, focusing on the role of geospatial technology and risk assessments in disaster resilience .
Also in attendance were Department of Science and Technology Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr., PAGASA Administrator Dr. Nathaniel T. Servando, PHIVOLCS Director Dr. Teresito C. Bacolcol, along with scientists, researchers, and invited guests.
The session highlighted the vital role of science and innovation in building a more resilient and secure future for the Philippines.
